VOLKER BERTELMANN

Biography

Volker Bertelmann is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and experimental musician, who was awarded with an Academy Award and a BAFTA for Best Original Score in 2022 for his music for Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front.


Bertelmann’s score for Garth Davis’s Oscar-nominated film Lion, co-composed with Dustin O’Halloran, received an AACTA Award and nominations for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA in 2017. He has provided music for countless films and TV shows internationally, most recently for Edward Berger’s drama Conclave, nominated for Best Music amongst others for the Critics’ Choice Award 2025, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA as well as an Academy Award.


A uniquely innovative pianist, who in his solo work goes by the name Hauschka, Bertelmann has recorded with the Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn, composed for soloists such as mandolinist Avi Avital and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, as well as for ensembles and orchestras, among others alongside the experimental Icelandic band múm for the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra as their artist in residence. Volker Bertelmann is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
